Why does the Salary Check ask for the number of years since one’s first job?

In general, experienced workers tend to earn more. This is due to various reasons - over the years they learn to do the job better, might understand more intricate details, be more responsible and efficient. Hence, accounting for years since one's first job and experience helps improve the reliability of WageIndicator’s Salary Check.

Is the Salary Check data updated frequently? If so, how often and what happens to the outdated information?

The calculation of the Salary Check is based on uninterrupted data collected of the preceding five years. This data is normally updated twice a year. All the outdated data is collected and stored by WageIndicator and helps to show trends in wage changes over time. However, the information received from the Salary Check is always based on the latest available data or if not possible, on the basis of indexed data.

Can one rely on the Salary Check information to get a pay raise or look for another job?

The information for Salary Check is generated through voluntary responses. Hence, it is not possible to expect 100% reliability. The honesty of the respondents, which is encouraged by WageIndicator, as well as the number of such respondents impacts the reliability of the information. In addition, the aim of the Salary Check is simply to provide the most accurate information about the expected wages for a specific occupation based on a certain set of questions. It does not, however, account for qualitative characteristics such as performance, quality of work, etc., which significantly impact wages and pay raises. That said, the information from the Salary Check and Wages in Context can be used as an aid in order to negotiate a pay raise or while looking for a job.
