Salary Checker FAQs

Is physical attractiveness a component of the Salary Check?

WageIndicator does not consider physical attractiveness in its Salary Check survey. This is because researchers have previously found that the role of physical attractiveness in occupations and salaries is almost negligible. They have identified characteristics such as confidence or diligence as more important at the workplace. Therefore, the Salary Check does not ask about physical characteristics and appearance.

Can I use the Salary Check data to ask for a raise at work?

WageIndicator’s Salary Check aims to provide accurate wage estimates for employees in a specific occupation based on their specific role, education level, industry, etc. However, the salary check does not account for factors that contribute to an individual's human capital, such as creativity, effort, and attitude toward work. These attributes have a significant impact on one's remuneration. The Salary Check provided by WageIndicator is therefore instructive but only reflects part of what impacts wage agreements between an employee and employer.

How does WageIndicator's Salary Check account for country-specific inflation?

All data used in the Salary Check has been gathered over the last five years. However, since certain countries have low data intake, prior wage information is often adjusted with official government data. Furthermore, in certain countries, data on Statutory Minimum Wages or national poverty levels are seldom updated. Thus, adjusting for inflation would be futile because these statistics are mandated by law. Wages In Context from WageIndicator, on the other hand, is always up-to-date with Minimum Wage information or National Poverty Lines. Regular Living Wage estimates are collected and incorporated. In extreme circumstances, such as when nations have very high inflation rates or undergo currency redenomination, WageIndicator does adjust for inflation.

Does the Salary Check account for overtime and bonuses?

WageIndicator's Salary Check is based on hours worked, thus bonuses are not reflected in the calculation of wages.

What is an occupation group in WageIndicator?

WageIndicator identifies 4,000 occupations, which are  classified based on the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) by the International Labor Organization (ILO). WageIndicator follows the latest classification, which groups data according to tasks and duties. ILO distributes occupations into smaller and larger occupation groups; either 4-digit, 3-digit, 2-digit, or 1-digit ISCO codes. The smallest occupation groups have a 4-digit ISCO-08 code while top level occupations are grouped into 10 occupation groups that have a 1-digit ISCO-08 code. WageIndicator only considers jobs with 13-digit ISCO-08 codes.

How many observations are required to make the data reliable?

On a country level, a minimum of 2000 observations are required for the data to qualify as reliable for the first Salary Check for a limited number of occupation groups. Observations must be authentic, and records must comply with Minimum Wages. WageIndicator uses statistical methods to test the meaningfulness and sufficiency of the data collected.

Why is the predicted salary lower or higher than my actual salary in the Salary Check?

The Salary Check predicts individual wages for any given person based on their characteristics. It predicts how much an individual with so and so characteristics is expected to earn. The quality of these predictions obviously depend on the level of accuracy of information compiled into the Salary Check. Firstly, information about individuals’ occupation recorded in such reports must be correctly entered. The WageIndicator database has 4,000 occupations so far. Although some occupational titles are similar, there is a substantial difference in their tasks and duties. If one’s salary is higher than reported by Salary Check, the individual may have characteristics that were rewarded in the labour market. If the salary is lower, it may be due to underpayment.
